21 Aug Through the darkness came love
The roots of Ecstatic Awakening Dance
A world shaken apart early in life. The brutality of bearing witness to physical violence and alcoholism. Shame and isolation. Depression and suicidal thoughts. This is the start of Amoda Maa Jevan’s story, a story that would wander and weave through life’s challenges but ultimately lead to the creation of Ecstatic Awakening Dance.
How could such darkness bring such positivity into the world?
For Amoda the trappings of her material life fell away in her late twenties, leaving her without a roof over her head or money in her pocket. The identities she had clung to personally and professionally disappeared.
Although devastating to begin with, this paved the way for a journey of inner exploration; one that ultimately led to India and the ashram of mystic Osho. Embracing her fears opened up a path to freedom and joy. It led to the ultimate realisation that love lies at the heart of everything.
With every new experience, negative and positive, the birth of Ecstatic Awakening Dance drew closer.
And so it began…
Amoda returned to the UK and it was here in the mid 90s, through her transformational workshops, that she developed Ecstatic Awakening Dance.
Energising breath work, freeform dancing and improvised music. It was empowering and rejuvenating. It was ecstasy.
Amoda’s journey forged onwards, with both light and darkness ahead of her. Now a contemporary spiritual teacher, her creation, Ecstatic Awakening Dance, has taken on a life of its own and spread across the globe.
Our very own Rebecca Hanscombe, Director and Lead trainer at the School of Ecstatic Movement, spent years embracing all Amoda had to offer at her various workshops, developing a true friendship along the way.
At a silent retreat with Amoda, the universe spoke to Rebecca, presenting her with a vision of herself creating a safe and loving space for others to experience the power of Ecstatic Awakening Dance.
New beginnings
With Amoda’s blessing and her wisdom shared, Rebecca began her sacred work of bringing Ecstatic Awakening Dance to those seeking deeper connection.
Over a decade has passed since that pivotal moment and today the School of Ecstatic Movement helps people from all walks of life experience their own inner bliss.
